I post a lot of hiking content with Nala and she’s almost always off leash and this is asked frequently. I’m always cautious, but I wouldn’t say that I’m ever truly worried that she will run away. We’ve been hiking since she was a puppy and have done hundreds of miles together.

I’ve always kept treats with me on hikes and Nala is very food motivated. So I reward her whenever she comes when called or even if she just comes back on her own and checks in. Over the years this has taught her that it’s good to be near me. Also, when she goes up ahead I always see her stop and look back to make sure I’m behind her and I also verbally reward her in those cases too.

I trust her and let her wander pretty far because I know she will come back. That’s not something that happens overnight and it can take years to build that type of trust. But it’s important to continue reinforcing the good behavior every time if hiking off leash with your pup is important to you.
