BOWIE TALKS HEATHEN

“Made for a real world, All things must pass...”

David Bowie’s Heathen album was released in 2002, 10th June UK / 11th June US.

The advertising campaign utilised the legend: CLASSIC DAVID BOWIE CIRCA 2002. Twenty-three years later that seems a more than reasonable claim.

Here’s a teaser from the Heathen Electronic Press Kit (EPK), which has DB outlining the meaning behind the concept of the title.

Watch the full 5:14 minutes of the EPK here: https://youtu.be/ugSW8T4FDY0 (Linktree in bio) wherein Bowie talks about working with Tony Visconti again, the guest musicians on the album and giving somebody else’s right arm.

It’s over by 5:15 minutes, when The Angels Have Gone.

SUNDAY TIMES MAG 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

“Gee my life's a funny thing, Am I still too young...”

A 28-year-old David Bowie gracing the front cover of a Sunday supplement in the UK was a big deal fifty years ago today.

The publishers of The Sunday Times Magazine clearly thought so too, with music press adverts and posters publicising the 20th July 1975 edition of the popular weekend mag, with the strapline: Has Ziggy Stardust come to earth? A similar poster with the same image and strapline had been used for the Fame instore poster at the same time. (See previous post)

Headed THE NEW FACE OF DAVID BOWIE, that Steve Schapiro cover was not only the very first Sunday magazine Bowie cover, but it was also the first glimpse fans had of this latest Bowie look, not to mention it being the first Bowie/Schapiro cover anywhere in the world.

Titled THE BOWIE ODYSSEY, the five-page colour article inside included rare pictures and a superb interview with Tina Brown.

For Bowie fans it was an absolute treat. A double page Sukita shot (albeit flipped), with previously unseen images of The Lower Third and a ticket for DAVID BOWIE AND THE BUZZ at Loughton Youth Centre, on Friday 15th July, 1966.

Then there was the beautifully written article and interview by Tina Brown, giving a snapshot tease of life at manager Michael Lippman’s home on Sunset Strip. Here’s the intro:

David Bowie had just breezed into Hollywood with a sidekick called Geoffrey. Bowie is dressed in brown plus-fours and braces, his short red orange hair tucked into a cloth cap. “This,” he explains in rapid cockney, “is my up-all-night look. Please note pallor of skin and trembling of hands.” He strikes a match on his trousers and lights a cigarette. “All right, darlin’. Where shall I begin?”

UK FAME SINGLE IS FIFTY TODAY - READ JASON DRAPER’S SONG STORY

“Is it any wonder, you’re far too cool to fool...”

Released in early June 1975 in America, David Bowie’s first #1 in the country was the Bowie/Lennon/Alomar composition, Fame.

It didn’t fare quite so well in the UK, where it was released 50 years ago today, though it was still a top 20 hit.

A side: Fame (Bowie/Lennon/Alomar)
B side: Right (Bowie)
Original UK release date: July 18 1975
Highest chart position: UK: #17 US: #1
Originally appeared on: Young Americans
Produced by: David Bowie, Harry Maslin

Our good friend Jason Draper has written another of his informative and well-researched pieces titled: ‘Fame’: Behind The Bowie/Lennon Co-Write That Debunked The Myth Of Celebrity.

Jason describes the track thus: “A spur-of-the-moment recording with John Lennon, ‘Fame’ drew listeners in with its funky strut but carried a stark warning for anyone seeking the limelight.”

It really is worth a read, and you can find the full piece here: www.davidbowie.com/blog/2025/7/18/uk-fame-single-is-fifty-today-read-jason-drapers-song-story (Linktree in bio)

MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE TO ERA 6 BOX

“I am the best jazz you’ve ever seen...”

In celebration of the upcoming era six box set, I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002 – 2016), here’s another of several posts we’ll be making relating to the content.

On this day in 2002, David Bowie performed an incredible 31-song set during the Montreux Jazz Festival at Auditorium Stravinski in Montreux, Switzerland.

Part of the set was made up of ten of the eleven tracks from Low, Weeping Wall was omitted. In fact, the album was only ever performed from start to finish in the right order at one gig.

Aside from Low, songs from Heathen featured heavily along with a fair few Bowie classics such as Life On Mars? as teased in our snippet.

As you know, Montreux Jazz Festival is available in its entirety in the I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002 – 2016) box set.

SEVEN SINGLE IS 25 TODAY

“The gods forgot they made me...”

Twenty-five years ago today, David Bowie released the third UK single from his 'hours...' album.

Seven was made available on the following 3 CD formats in the UK...

CD1 features Beck remix & original version of "Seven"
CD2 features "I'm Afraid of Americans" (Nine Inch Nails version) & video interactive element. Includes exclusive poster
CD3 features exclusive live recordings of "Seven" "Something In The Air" and "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell" plus four limited edition postcards

Even these fine incentives weren't enough to propel Seven into the UK top 30, where it languished at #32.

Anyway, if you fancy a bit of a singalong, watch the full lyric video here: https://youtu.be/UVpcupE1xEo (Linktree in bio)

EVERYONE SAYS 'HI' ON TOTP

“Hope the weather’s good, and it’s not too hot...”

In celebration of the upcoming era six box set, I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002 – 2016), here’s the first of many posts we’ll be making relating to the content.

David Bowie performed Everyone Says 'Hi' on Top of The Pops in 2002. The song features on the Heathen album and the original track plus live, radio edit and remix versions are included in the box set.

Slow Burn, Cactus, I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship and Everyone Says 'Hi' were performed for the first part of the taping session for Top Of The Pops back in June 2002 at Kaufman Studios in New York.

Bowie then returned to the stage in a green suit to perform tracks for TOTP2, including Sound and Vision, Ashes To Ashes, Fame and Absolute Beginners, along with a second version of Slow Burn for another show.

Everyone Says 'Hi' on TOTP is available to watch in full here: https://youtu.be/Bdwj9eNMECc

LIVE AID AT WEMBLEY 40TH ANNIVERSARY

“Just for one day...”

Right about now 40 years ago in the UK on 13th July 1985, some visitors to this page were watching U2 live onstage at Wembley Stadium for the global event that was Live Aid.

With Dire Straits and Queen yet to perform before Bowie’s appearance at 19:23, some were no doubt wondering if their bladders would hold out, due to having to consume much liquid to counteract the effects of the hot summer day. (Not unlike today)

Mishaps aside, it seems that the majority weren’t risking missing Bowie, and his reception was evidence of that.

His four-song set of TVC 15, Rebel Rebel, Modern Love and Heroes preceded harrowing footage of Ethiopian famine victims, for which Bowie dropped a song from his set, as described by Harvey Goldsmith...

"One afternoon before the concert, Bowie was up in the office and we started looking through some videos of news footage, and we watched the CBC piece [footage from the Ethiopian famine, cut to the Cars' song "Drive"]. Everyone just stopped. Bowie said: 'You've got to put that in the show; it's the most dramatic thing I've ever seen.' That was probably one of the most evocative things in the whole show and really got the money rolling in."

“Unfurl the flag…”

Photographer Eric Stephen Jacobs was responsible for the August 1974 session in LA that became the Young Americans sleeve. A second session several months later was organised for promotional shots for the album fifty years ago in New York.

In the event, the famous flying suit with American flag session, from which today’s pictures, were mostly utilised for promotion of The Man Who Fell To Earth and a lifesize shop standee for Young Americans.

BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) and will be released on 12th September.

DAVID BOWIE 6. I CAN’T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (2002 – 2016) is a twelve-CD, eighteen-piece vinyl and standard digital download/streaming box set named after the closing track on ★ (BLACKSTAR), Bowie’s final studio album. The box sets include newly remastered versions (except ★ and No Plan), with input from David’s co-producer Tony Visconti.

2002’s HEATHEN was the first album Bowie and Visconti had worked on together in twenty-two years. Recorded in a residential studio in upstate New York, it reminded Visconti of his time with David in Berlin in the 1970s, “There was no control room. The console was at one end of the studio and the band was placed at the other end. The acoustics were quite live and from my experience of making “Heroes” at Hansa Studios in Berlin, in the huge Grand Hall (known as Meistersaal recording hall), I wanted to make these acoustics work for us.”
