Hi my friends! She’s blonde and she’s back in action!! Well, kind of…
I’ve just launched a Substack called ‘Penfriendship’ as a way to connect with my followers again. The name is an ode to my love of writing letters which I have done since childhood when I discovered friendship via writing long, loving, confessional letters was a much more comfortable way for me to befriend people than actually going up and talking to them (lol!) I am still bullishly writing letters to people and trying to turn back the clock on the changes technology has wrought in my social life, and now I decided to open that practice up on a public blog so I can share the love of letter-writing with a wide audience. I still get many handwritten letters and long DMs and haven’t cracked a system where I reply to each of them but at least with this Substack I can reply to one per week! 💌 The link to subscribe is in my bio.

As for life stuff, I’m still trying to write a novel 🫠 I honestly thought I could pull a Victor Hugo & disappear from the world enigmatically for 6 months and return with a perfect polished riveting work of fiction, but all that happened was I got really weepy and weird and that seeped into my novel and I’ve had to start afresh. I will get there eventually but I think this might be more of a 3-5 year project and in the meantime I’d like to stop starving myself of sunlight and social connections!! So my Substack is a way to let a bit of air and life and CHAOS back into my very punishing and non productive creative routine!

So, Substack is where you’ll find me every Friday for a few hours a week! See you over there! 👋🏻

Just finished @davidholmes83 memoir and wanted to give it some love! 📖♥️

David was always so inclusive and friendly to everyone on the Harry Potter sets back in the day, which meant a lot to a newbie like me joining a well established family. He was a constant positive presence until the day he broke his neck performing a stunt and was paralysed from the chest down, so I was very intrigued to read an in-depth account of his physical and spiritual journey to heal. 💛

I’ve been fascinated by dancers and gymnasts my whole life, imagining that having that kind of power and capability in your body must feel like complete freedom 🤸 This book was such an interesting journey for following someone who could do pretty much anything with their body, to suddenly being so dependent on others to fulfil the most basic and personal functions. Having known him as a tirelessly positive person at the height of his profession, I was so surprised to learn how many demons David was running from that he used to propel him to accomplish incredible feats, and which he was then forced to confront when his life changed utterly. There were many parts that were difficult to read, such as the insight into the brutal machismo attitude that pervades much of the stunt world and the latter chapters where David was railing against his circumstances by turning to more destructive outlets, but I think the story is all the better for exposing the most painful and humbling aspects of his journey. It was also very funny, intimate and colourful, and ultimately brimming with love for humanity. It’s given me a much deeper appreciation for the work of stunt performers in film & tv, and for the importance of developing a spiritual life outside of the talents and passions we heavily identify with.

Congrats @davidholmes83 for your strength and vulnerability in writing this and please don’t ever stop sharing your stories!! ♥️♥️♥️

Things of beauty lately ♥️
1. The colours of the trees in Waterlow Park in autumn 😍❤️‍🔥🧡 The trees are my teachers 🙏🏻

2. My new coat from @unreal_fur 🖤 tres romantique.
(My gold locket and earrings in pic 5 are by @jessicadelotz 🤍)

3. This chocolate cake I made from the new @thehappypear book. Omg it was to. Die. For. 🤤 As a vegan chocolate cake connoisseur, this one takes the…cake? I am loving the book which has so many inspiring and comforting recipes as well as nostalgic reflections on their journey so far. Well done Steve & Dave and team 👏🏻

4. Walks in the woods with Malo everyday. She is such a curious being and is fearless in her adventures. Except on fireworks nights, she hates them 😢 🎇 she is currently trembling on the couch beside me covered in blankets…

5. Gorgeous new book about Venus, goddess of love and beauty by another favourite goddess @sassylisalister who has taught me so much about getting in touch with my own appetite and lust for life 🩷💗💘

6. Puff in this pod looking like a fairytale creature every day. Contrary to cat lore, she willingly traded in her cardboard boxes to sleep in this thing (thank you @offmytreeshop !) I think of her as the love-child of the owl & the pussycat, who could not find another of her kind and so she abandoned society, retreating to the wilderness where she dwells in this strange pod deep in the middle an enchanted forest, a rare sight, a figure of alienation and deep spiritual contemplation. If you are lucky enough to find this bizarre hybrid creature, and you bear treats, you may be granted a wish. More likely, a nonsensical haiku. 💭

7. My love!! 💘 Den scaled a tall, swaying, totally unclimbable looking tree to get that last pic. Shoutout to this man for always keeping life interesting 🙃👫

Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes, you made me feel very seen!! Which was SO nice since I have been working hard at the art of invisibility in my daily writing where I’ve become a creepy spidery presence that lurks in the corners of rooms spinning those silky webs that absorb the scents and textures of life, but never being drawn into the drama unfolding in the room. And I must say I miss being part of drama!! So thank you for the birthday fuss.

I don’t have much to say on here 🤷🏻‍♀️ I am sorry I’m not connecting or contributing much but ultimately I need a quiet life to hear my own writing voice. I’m trying for 1,000 words a day at the moment, don’t always hit it but close! The main thing is to keep going. I’ve talked a lot about writing but my practice was very stop/start depending on my mood and I only really started GOING for it this month when a writer I admired told me to forget about plot and theme and just write words down!! I was tripping myself up constantly trying to plot the perfect novel and I said to her, ‘I don’t honestly know what the story I’m writing is about’ and she gave me the best, most boring and sobering advice: ‘You’ll only find that out on the far side of hard work.’ 😐 unfortunately, you just can’t argue with that.

So here are some pictures of life lately. Just cats and words and Den. We have SO many cats all of a sudden. There is an enormous difference between 2 cats vs 4 cats. All of them have such different needs & schedules & particular posh brands of food they’ll deign to eat. 8 orb-like eyes follow my movements out of bed each morning as I deposit food in 4 separate corners of the room, then the dog swoops quietly in and laps it up behind my back. The cycle begins again. Puff, ever peculiar, decides she likes the taste of the kittens brand of cat litter and is conceivably eating a 10% urine diet, and regurgitates her share all over my office, which again the dog mops up. The house smells so much of cat shit that it lingers in my nostrils long after I’ve left the house and I never stop picking up cushions in search of it. 33 seems too young for this madness. Still, a strange contentment has settled 🙏🏻

Joyce’s life is one filled with tragedy. 🐘💔

Stolen from the wild after watching her family be killed, Joyce spent decades forced to perform tricks in circuses across the United States. Eventually, she ended up at Six Flags in New Jersey, where she lives a primarily solitary life, separated from the other elephants.

World Animal Protection’s powerful new documentary, launched on #WorldElephantDay and narrated by @evannalynch, award-winning actress and World Animal Protection Global Ambassador, tells Joyce’s heartbreaking story.

🔔COMMENT #FreeJoyce and we’ll send you a link to watch the documentary and our petition to take action!

Hi all! In case you missed it, I’ll be performing a story I wrote for @onetrackminds on July 2nd at @wiltonsmusichall and there are still plenty of tickets (at the link in my bio).

In a move that is very out of character for me, I have already written and rehearsed my story and am feeling strangely relaxed about the whole thing. Normally at this stage after committing to a public event I’d be at my computer procrastinating by concocting elaborate email explanations as to why I am no longer available, but I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s stories and telling mine! So, come! 📖

More info about the event at the link in bio.

Pablo by the pond 🌳
I’m finding the process of watching the tadpoles evolve very inspiring in unexpected ways. I can’t get over how long their evolution into frogs takes! When they arrived I expected it would be: week 1: tadpoles, week 2: legs, week 3: leaping off lily pads, week 4: to the moon! 🚀 But actually it has been weeks and weeks of them just swimming as tadpoles munching their way through the pond. They eat and eat with barely perceptible changes to their shape. I grow impatient with them. ‘Hurry up and be frogs already’ 😕 But it’s reminding me how slow and arduous the process of growth is. It’s day upon day of consistent munching, resting, repeating. You trust the process even on days when the work bears no tangible fruit. I get bored and ignore them for a few days, then come back and feel gratified by the small visible changes. If the tadpoles listened to my inner monologue they’d have given up long ago and withered away to the bottom of the pond.

The creative process is the same of course. I have had to make my life SO boring in order to make any progress with my book. I’ve quit almost everything that distracts me from it. I get so frustrated on days when I’ve worked hard and yet seem to have made no progress, or indeed have taken a step backwards. But, as the tadpoles remind me, the human eye is not sophisticated enough to perceive some of the most profound internal growth. Just show up and do your munching/writing.

The thing I’m finding most difficult about writing is the life stuff in between. I love being in the creative vortex but when the day ends and I have to do all the boring admin of keeping myself alive, it takes me out of it again. I have to shower AGAIN??? That took me a flipping hour yesterday. All this cooking, going for walks, messaging people back. I wish I could take a couple weeks and bank up sleep and food so I could fully surrender to fantasyland and stay in the world of the book. Writing a book is like living two lives and the real life one costs far too much energy. But it is teaching me patience and discipline, and when I forget, the tadpoles are still there doing their thing. 🪷
