A little shot of hope and optimism today from the United Nations. I got to speak about AI at their annual Internet Governance Forum (my first time at a UN thing 🤩) and it really does feel good to see so many people from so many places around the world convening in good faith to figure out how we can all work together to help the future go well.

Debates over AI would be more productive if we could stop over-simplifying. AI is not all bad, and it’s not all good. Just because someone’s excited about the tech doesn’t make them complicit with the Oligarchy. And just because someone’s advocating for responsible guardrails doesn’t make them a Communist.

Whenever anyone mentions guardrails for AI, someone else objects, “No, we have to go fast!” But just because we’re going fast doesn’t mean we’re going the right way.

As long as an AI company can copy all of our content into their model at no cost and spit out quasi-new content for close to no cost, there’s no logical business case for paying creators anymore. But let’s be crystal clear—this is about so much more than content creators.
