my time in the studio with sabrina and amy is so special to me. i love them and this song more than im able to express. thank you so much to those who worked on this song and to sabrina who is without a doubt the voice and writer of her time. honored to work on this and love it dearly! run don’t walk. !manchild forever!

saw on a stereogum post that the sunset tree by the mountain goats has turned 20. feel compelled to share my personal story with it.

the steel train guys & i were obsessed with bone machine by waits. every detail. the panning, the players, how it was recorded ... where it was recorded. prairie sun studio in cotati CA had the infamous “waits” room where he apparently played the human bone marimba. our label at the time was drive thru records and god bless richard and stefanie who got us studio time there with stephen barncard producing. so we drive from jersey to CA where we live & record for some weeks. i was a mess. this wasn’t long after the passing of my sister & i had no grip. this is where i “failed the acid test”. its where i started to fully break after putting my energy & grief into a life on the road. on the day we were finishing, the day picture above was taken, a van pulls up & john vanderslice & the mountain goats start loading in. i didnt know about either at the time but this moment would change my life. we go home. i fully lose control & enter a phase of grief where i could not leave the house. i was real gone. during this time evan texted me & told me that the band we had met when we were loading out of prairie sun had put out that album they made. that night i played the sunset tree. my heart opened. i saw flickers of light ahead. john darnielle’s accounts of depressions & rage met me exactly where i was. his survival became my survival. if he could write ‘dance music’ about watching his mother be abused and escaping into his tiny world…. then maybe there was something i could say about the ride to a funeral. if he could somehow wrap it all up with ‘love, love, love’ maybe i had a one of those songs in me. if he could make it through this year maybe i could too. the album and his words become what i needed to start to move forward. i dedicated my writing to finding my own voice within what he had given me.

so this is for everyone who has been changed by this album & everyone who will be. we all have those bodies of work that give us faith when we think we’ve lost it. without the sunset tree i dont get to be here in more ways than one.

and for the first time ever… shadow west! october 25th in irvine. growing up on tour and paying in orange county i would come home and tell people the shows had the jersey feeling. didnt have the “shadow of the city” language in my head back then but i knew what was coming from the audience. some of the best nights of my life happened at the chain reaction. so… orange county here we come!

⁃ the post woke art / comedy movement was by a landslide the most boring arm of the american left in history. making fun of the strive for decency or dedicating an entire chapter of your artistic career to complaining you cant say what you want while simultansiousl proving you can say what you want and getting rich in the process but more and more artistically void was the great boredom of our time.

⁃ lastly, christmas songs are not happy. if you’re happy on christmas you wouldn’t write a song. some xmas songs pretend to be happy but at best they are hopeful. i hope im LESS depressed on christmas. i hope my baby returns home on christmas or at least on new years. the truth is you wouldnt write about a specific date and time unless you wanted to stamp it as awful in hopes that one day you’ll laugh at the specificity you felt the need to eternalize. you know who you are and i still cant stand you.
