@torikelly . Where do I even START with you???

This session will be forever etched in my memory as one of the craziest musical experiences of my life. There is literally no other vocalist on the face of the Earth to match the range, agility, colour, phrasing, attention to detail and PATIENCE you have. My harmonic ambition for this verse rendered it practically unsingable… but if there was one singer who could do it justice, I KNEW it had to be you. Safe to say you just blew it completely out of the water.

I swung by Tori’s house last October, for a lightning-fast session, as she had to rush off perform with @lawrencetheband that very night. As a result, the entire session lasted approximately an hour. I left in a state of shock 🤯 and, a mess of inspiredness, recorded all the harmonies beneath, that very night, before flying to Mumbai and delivering Vol. 4 to mastering 48 hours later.

And yet, with all the craziness of her musicianship, the thing that blows me the most away about Tori is her human spirit. Tori - I am just so proud to be your friend and SO HAPPY that you’re on this planet, raising the bar for all of us. You really are the best of the best of the best.

Bridge Over Troubled Water OUT NOW!!!

I cannot wait to do this live someday, somehow 😈

Ten years ago today, on July 1st 2015, I played my first EVER gig. The debut “One-Man-Show”, at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. My life changed forever that night.

I built this show with my mighty brother @gomyben , with the dream of bringing my little home music room to life on stage. ‘Twas a bonkers setup - 10 instruments in a circle; five different loopers, all for different areas of the stage; me, running around playing them all one by one, building up the arrangements.

Ben and I built the world’s first 12-voice vocal harmoniser, a real-time vocal sampler, that enabled me to play the sorts of expensive chords I loved recording and sing them, live on stage. I still use the very same harmoniser today :-)

On top of that, we ran two Kinect cameras, locked to the loopers, that captured my 3D skeletal movements as I played, and projected visual representations of the multiple Jacobs as they looped… as well as duplicated my face on the screen behind me as I played notes on the harmoniser: high faces for high notes, and low faces for low notes.

We didn’t have a ton of rehearsal time, and this gig was in fact the first time we’d ever even run the show from start to finish. I’d never attempted anything remotely close to this on a stage before, and it was exhilarating beyond measure. @quincyjones flew in from Los Angeles to introduce me on stage. I’ll never forget it, ever.

Exactly one year later, on July 1st 2016, I released “In My Room”, and the whole adventure truly began. Before long, I was running around outside the circle, getting the crowd involved, and that’s where the Audience Choir first was born.

And today….I write to you from my dressing room in Wiesbaden, Germany, in the middle of my fourth world tour, thinking back to little Jacob, and feeling so grateful for his bravery, tenacity, and willingness to step far outside his comfort zone and give this crazy idea a try. If it wasn’t for this gig, I do not know where I’d be today!!

Fun fact: the Digico mixing console we brought in specifically to run the show is still in Ronnie’s today!

Listen to the single on all streaming platforms and buy a special t-shirt to spread the message far and wide: ocean protection over exploitation. Link in bio 💙
