The first time I met Rick Rubin I was 19 years old and he interviewed me at Shangrila. Driving up the long ass driveway felt like pilgrimage to some holy ground - like going to meet the Buddha or some shit. Like he had this mythical aura around him. But then I met him - and he just a simple wise ass dude with great taste. He is prob the closest guy I ever met to enlightenment, him and my mom and Reed too sometimes. We talked about love as ball of yarn inside you. Pulling on heart strings. Keeping the lines clean and not tangling them up and also not letting the ball get too tight. Flash forward a decade and I brought my Texas homies back to Ricks and we made some of the music you’re gonna hear on blush. Felt like a big slumber party. They all in love with someone. They all in love with someone. They all in love.

It’s 11pm and my first night back in Montgomery. I pulled into the gas station, parked the jeep. Back stuck to the leather seat, peeled off and went inside to get a drink. They was playing Respect My Mind by Z-Ro on the speakers and I knew the clerk was gonna be a bad bitch. I looked up and they were. Nodded and walked to the slushee machine. Pressed a cup and poured one up to the brim. Nodded to the clerk and paid. As I walked out I heard them say “welcome home, Cliff”. I turned back and they nodded. I blushed. Got in my car and drove down the street, windows down, put on the same song. Took a breath that made me feel like I hadn’t taken a breath in the last 6 months.
