🇨🇱 Chile’s irreplaceable Guafo Island is now protected from coal mining, timber logging and other destructive industries. 🪵 Thanks to a recent purchase from a private owner, @rewild and partners have ensured this Key Biodiversity Area is forever preserved. ⛰

🟢 Now the partners aim to donate the property to the Chilean government to convert it into a Chilean National Park, ensuring this vital place is conserved for future generations. Guafo Island is critical to global biodiversity and the overall health of our planet.

🐦 This island is home to significant breeding populations of seabirds, including the world’s largest breeding colony of Sooty Shearwaters, which migrate over 40,000 miles from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere every single year. It also boasts Magellanic Penguins and a breeding population of Endangered Marine Otters.

Protecting Guafo Island was made possible thanks to support from Re:wild, the Jeff and Marieke Rothschild Foundation, the Wyss Foundation, Art into Acres, Cultiva and WWF Chile. Re:wild was represented, on a pro-bono basis, in the purchase by a team of Akin attorneys. The Carey law firm served as Re:wild’s Chilean local counsel for the transaction.

The Amazon may feel far away, but its fate is tied to ours. I’m proud to help bring @juma_xipaia’s story to life in @yanunifilm to showcase her work in protecting forests, culture and community in the Brazilian Amazon. These forests play a critical role in regulating the global climate through their vast biodiversity and are upheld by the Indigenous communities who have inhabited these lands for centuries.

Their destruction by extractive industries isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a human one.

Our goal is for #YanuniFilm to build powerful momentum behind Juma’s mission—affirming the sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples and recognizing the Brazilian rainforest, along with the megadiverse forests of Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as vital to the survival of our planet.

In November when world leaders will gather for COP30 in the Amazon with an opportunity to pass two critical initiatives – establishing the Tropical Forests Forever Fund and urging countries to join the Intergovernmental Land Tenure Commitment – we hope they will honor Juma’s indelible words:

“The forest is our mother; she feeds us even when we forget to thank her.”

I’m honored to present @yanunifilm, a powerful new documentary directed by @richardladkani that tells the extraordinary story of Juma Xipaia. Amid escalating threats in the Brazilian Amazon, Juma rises with courage, resistance and hope. She stands not only for her people and her territory, but for a global movement of resistance far beyond the forest.

Follow @yanunifilm for updates and join us in amplifying Juma’s message.

#YanuniFilm has its world premiere at the @tribeca Closing Night Gala tonight.

Grateful to be producing this film alongside @juma_xipaia and Anita Ladkani with @daxdasilva, Joanna Natasegara, @nixlaura, @ericterena, Martin Choroba and @philippschall as executive producers.

This World Ocean Day, as the UN Ocean Conference is about to begin, we have five years left to quadruple effective ocean protection and fill the gap to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 (30x30). Scientists and economists have documented the benefits of full marine protection, but the new film Ocean with David Attenborough tells their story more clearly than ever. At 99, the world’s greatest natural history storyteller shares his most powerful message: marine protection works.

According to a new study by Dynamic Planet and @natgeopristineseas, the world needs to create 190,000 new small marine protected areas (ideally no-take areas) nearshore to get to 30% of the territorial seas alone. That would restore marine life, replenish small-scale fisheries, improve the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on a healthy ocean for their livelihoods, and foster climate resilience.

My organization @rewild is proud to support @reviveourocean, a co-producer of the Ocean film, to help scale coastal conservation globally by inspiring, enabling, and equipping local coastal communities to protect their own ocean backyard. Rooted in local knowledge and action, the initiative partners with best-in-class ocean conservation leaders, ensuring that marine protection is driven by those who know their waters best.

🦍 Meet four gorillas giving us all hope! Once orphaned by poachers, Isangi, Lulingu, Mapendo, and Ndjingala got a second chance thanks to @gracegorillas. Now they are back in the wild. 🌿

Against all odds, they have returned to the wilds of the Democratic Republic of the Congo within @virunganationalpark. This is the first time gorillas have been rewilded from GRACE, the world’s only sanctuary for Eastern Lowland Gorillas. Since their release, the population of these Critically Endangered apes within Virunga has increased by a game-changing 50%.

🇨🇩 This is a beautiful story of survival, one that is far from over, thanks to the local Congolese communities who have driven this success. Together GRACE Gorillas, Virunga National Park, @gorilladoctors, and @rewild are thrilled to share this incredible success.

The reintroduction of Eastern Lowland Gorillas to the wild was made possible with support from the European Union, Explore.org, a direct charitable activity of the Annenberg Foundation, Arcus Foundation, Disney Conservation Fund, Margot Marsh Biodiversity Fund, and QATO Foundation.

🌍 Earth Day was officially established in 1970 to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems. Millions of Americans, including college students from across the country demonstrated in support of the planet.

This spurred Congress to authorize the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, marking the beginning of the most advanced system of environmental protection in the world at the time.

Earth Day reminds us that environmental stewardship is essential for ensuring a good quality of life for ourselves and future generations. The environmental issues of tomorrow will require innovative solutions today. As we celebrate Earth Day, we must acknowledge past achievements and the work that still lies ahead.

Pope Francis was a transformational leader — not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism.

He demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, most notably through his groundbreaking 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. This powerful document served as a clarion call for a fundamental shift in how we relate to the planet. Emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life, Pope Francis urged individuals, communities, institutions, and world leaders to unite in caring for our common home. His words helped catalyze momentum ahead of the global 2015 COP21 conference, ultimately contributing to the formation of the Paris Agreement.

During the filming of my documentary Before the Flood in 2016, I had the honor of sitting down with Pope Francis for a conversation on the urgent need to address climate change. That experience was enlightening, deeply moving and thought provoking.

In 2023, Pope Francis expanded upon Laudato Si’ with the publication of Laudate Deum: Apostolic Exhortation on the Climate Crisis. In it, he renewed his call for immediate and decisive climate action, reminding us that “we are part of Nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it,” and that we must not view the world from the outside, but from within.

Pope Francis was one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of environmentalists around the world. May he rest in peace.

Honeybee deaths have hit record highs in the United States. For years, wild bees and other pollinators have been quietly disappearing due to human activities. Now even farmed honeybees are dying in alarming numbers.

There are more than 20,000 different kinds of bees, and they all play a vital role in our ecosystems, while many are critical for our food system - pollinating around 75% of the world’s leading food crops which we depend on.

Scientists have determined that the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, and pesticide use badly affects all bees. The loss of both wild and farmed bees is already starting to limit the supply of some crops. These declines are part of a broader crisis and researchers warn that the loss of insects threatens basic functions of life on Earth.

🐝 But it’s not too late to help save our bees, and everyone can help, join @beewild.campaign 🐝 Link in bio to learn more.
