Michael B. Jordan refuses to slow down. He’s playing twins in @sinnersmovie, a daring new collaboration with director Ryan Coogler, and taking a second turn behind the camera directing himself in a new Thomas Crown reboot. He’s also applying his seemingly limitless focus to a host of non-film-related projects. But he doesn’t always want to work this hard.

“I’m hoping that one day something clicks where it’s like, You don’t have to work at the same pace that you worked at your entire career. I think it’s coming soon. But I said this 10 years ago. I really, really, really think it’s coming soon. I really do.”

In an era of mounting crises in Hollywood, Michael B. Jordan did the impossible: got people off their couches and into theaters for an original movie. ‘Sinners,’ the hit $341 million–grossing vampire thriller, sparked countless think pieces about race and appropriation, the kind of culturally dominant movie discourse that hasn’t been seen swirling around an original film since Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ introduced “the Sunken Place” into the lexicon eight years ago.

Like the older leading men whose careers he wishes to emulate — “Denzel, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Leo” — Jordan doesn’t just want to be a star but a mogul with a diversified portfolio. “I like playing chess,” he says in a way that makes playing chess sound less recreational than mandatory. “Long game.”
