Five years ago, the pandemic was in its early stages, and with acting jobs drying up in Los Angeles, #NicholasAlexanderChavez found himself selling cars and doing door-to-door insurance sales in Florida. Four years later, he looked out onto L.A.’s Sunset Boulevard to see three enormous billboards for ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ the Ryan Murphy and @netflix series he was starring in.

Chavez credits a “mindset shift,” brought on by advice he received from someone close to him that turned things around. “I realized that whatever you’re doing, you should just give it 100 percent, because you’re there anyway,” he says. He started showing up to work with the idea that he wanted to “be the best at selling cars today” so he could “be the best actor tomorrow.” Right now, Chavez is gearing up for the July release of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ the latest sequel to the 1997 iconic horror film of the same name.

“One of the interesting things that my parents and I always say to each other is that we all grew up together. You know, because they were kids when they had me. So, a lot of the lessons that we learned about life – we all had to learn with one another.”

@nicholasalexanderchavez thinks it’s cool to care – and always has done. When the Texas born actor first got wind of Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, he made it his mission to get as immersed as he could. Fueled by the research and intrigue of it all, his first dramatic role became one he looks back on with not only fondness, but immense gratitude. Next up, buckle in for another dose of signature Chavez chills in I Know What You Did Last Summer, landing in July. In the meantime, he chats to IMAGINE about what compels him to take on these particular roles, how he manages to have fun on just about every project, and how his coming-of-age story has influenced the leading man he is today.

“I think when it comes to playing a real person, you feel an enormous responsibility, of course. You’re caught in the middle between wanting to give as authentic a portrayal as possible, and then also being beholden to the creative direction of so many other people and where we arrive at is this special and indescribable place that art exists in. That is the job, that is the medium.”

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for @nicholasalexanderchavez whose two Ryan Murphy projects, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Grotesquerie were released just days apart. Featuring in our Autumn/Winter 2024 issue, the actor talks working with one of TV’s most dominant world-builders, going down rabbit holes in his research of the Menendez family, portraying a priest-slash-aspiring peloton instructor in Grotesquerie and what comes next after such a star-making chapter. Head to manabouttown.tv to pre-order the issue now!

All eyes on him! Nicholas Alexander Chavez @nicholasalexanderchavez — the next cover star of our new HIGH ROMANCE FW 24 issue — might seem like a rookie to some unsuspecting eyes. For those who haven’t been paying attention, the Texas-born actor can be considered a fresh face among titans like Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem. However, it’s undeniable that he’s now acting alongside the best of the best. In Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, second iteration of Ryan Murphy’s hit Netflix series, Chavez delivers a highly nuanced portrayal as the elder of the two in one of America’s most controversial crime stories. With this role, Chavez has successfully entered the Murphy multiverse — next up, he’s starring in the mega-producer’s upcoming horror show, Grotesquerie. The future looks bright for the young star’s darkly hued and promising career.
