The Bends marked the start of @thomyorke and @stanleydonwood’s experiments into making art together with the new and unruly tools of technology. For this album, they started with a plan to find an iron lung to photograph but when exploring the basement of a local hospital they stumbled across an intriguing resuscitation dummy instead. — This Is What You Get opens at the @ashmoleanmuseum, Oxford on 6th August. Shipping in August, the exhibition catalogue features a carefully curated selection of visual works of art by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke, alongside guest essays from artists, curators and broadcasters. This beautifully designed book features a carefully curated selection of the visual works of art by @stanleydonwood and @thomyorke made over the last thirty years to accompany albums by @radiohead, Yorke and @thesmiletheband. It showcases the wide array of their long-term collaborative work, ranging from well-known digital compositions of the OK Computer era to recent tempera paintings, from iconic etchings to unpublished drawings in their sketchbooks. The high-quality reproductions are complemented by exclusive interviews with the artists, and essays by Alex Farquharson, Nico Kos Earle, Benjamin Myers, James Putnam, Mark Radcliffe and Jennifer Ramkalawon. Published on the occasion of a major retrospective exhibition at the @ashmoleanmuseum Oxford from 6th August until 11th January 2026, this unique book explores the art of album covers, looking at the creative forces behind some of the most important and influential music of the past few decades. Last month, Hamlet Hail to the Thief concluded its runs at Aviva Studios, Manchester, and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. One month to go: This Is What You Get: Stanley Donwood, Radiohead, Thom Yorke opens next month on 6th August at the @ashmoleanmuseum, Oxford. The exhibition will run through to 11th January 2026, showcasing Stanley and Thom’s unique partnership, focused around the relationship between visual art and music. More than 180 objects will be on display from the artists’ 30-year collaboration, including original paintings for album covers, digital compositions, etchings, unpublished drawings, and lyrics in their sketchbooks.
