Traditional Sasa Dango Making in Niigata๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Today, I learned how to make traditional sasa dango (bamboo leaf-wrapped rice dumplings) from Grandma Oshima๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿฝ

It takes time and effort to make them by hand, but gathering together like thisโ€”sharing stories, learning, creating, and then enjoying the sweets togetherโ€”truly reminds me of the warmth of human connection and the changing seasons.
Fewer people make sasa dango by hand these days, but I hope to help preserve this beautiful tradition that grandmothers like her have lovingly passed down through generations ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿฝ

Thank you so much, Grandma๐Ÿค

July has been all about learning how to weed and hill the field๐ŸŒฟ
The seedlings we planted in June have been growing steadily but so have the weeds around them! If we leave the weeds alone, they start stealing the nutrients and sunlight that are meant for the seedlings. So over a few days, I carefully cleared them out one by one.

Then, I also did some hilling to help support the roots and keep the plants stable.
The day after I arrived in Niigata, I thought Iโ€™d take it easy and start work around 9am but it was already super hot and I was drenched in sweat!

From the next day, I started waking up at 4am, just like my farming teacher Mr. Oshima. It was so much cooler, and I learned that if I work in the early morning and again in the late afternoon, I can avoid the hottest hours of the day!

During the midday heat, I head to the sea or the river to cool off and relax!!
Iโ€™ve found the perfect summer routine ๐Ÿ˜†
So much fun~!!!!!

Millet Babiesโ€™ First Day in the Field๐ŸŒฟ

The millet seedlings we sowed have grown up enough to finally move to the field!
The lower leaves of the mochi millet had turned a soft yellow and I learned that itโ€™s their way of saying, โ€œHey! Weโ€™re running out of nutrients in this little potโ€ฆ itโ€™s time to plant us in the soil!โ€ So cute ^o^
I dug little holes by hand and gently patted them into the earth.
Now all we need is a nice, heavy rain to come and help them settle in. โ˜”๏ธ
At the same time, I planted some takakibi (sorghum) and uruchi awa (hulled foxtail millet) too!!
Next month, the seedlings of the hie (barnyard millet) and egoma (perilla) I sowed will be ready, so Iโ€™ll be planting those in this field one by one too!!
Iโ€™m so excited to see how this field transforms over the coming weeksโ˜บ๏ธ
Touching the soil gave me time to really be with myself.
Time flew by, and I felt like I was reconnecting with my childhood self. It was so relaxing ๐Ÿ’ž

So actuallyโ€ฆ an 85-year-old grandpa in Niigata told me that, because of his age, he could no longer continue farming and decided to let go of all his rice fields. Luckily, he decided to allow me to use them and grow rice this season!
This time, I planted Koshihikari, Niigataโ€™s famous variety of Japanese rice!
The field next to mine is now being used by my friend Tomo chan, who I met through farming. Weโ€™ve decided to support each other and grow our rice organically, without any pesticides, to help protect nature too ๐Ÿค
Right now, Japanโ€™s agriculture is facing a serious crisis with a rapidly aging farming population and lack of successors.
In 2000, there were about 2.4 million farmers. But by 2023, that number had dropped to around 1.16 millionโ€”and around 70% of them are over 65 years old, with more than 70% of them having no one to pass their fields on to ๐Ÿฅฒ

My own Sato family in Niigata used to grow rice too, but that tradition came to an end.. Until I decided to start it again โค๏ธ
I feel like my ancestors will be smiling down, happy to see rice being grown again๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿฝ
Ok~~~โ•
Now Iโ€™m going to check my rice fields!
Bye bye๐Ÿ‘‹

Reimagining Japanโ€™s Vacant Homes & Kominka with Airbnb!!
I'm so excited to announce a new project in partnership with Airbnb to help revitalize Japan's vacant homes and historic kominka!
In Japan, there are currently around 9 million vacant homes across the country due to a variety of reasonsโ€”such as an aging population, declining birthrate, and youth migration to the cities. If things continue as they are, itโ€™s estimated that 1 in 3 houses could be vacant within the next 10 years.
As the number of empty homes increases, towns begin to lose their charm and vitality. Fires become more common, schools and shops close down, local traditions fade away, and human connections in the community start to disappear๐Ÿฅบ
These issues are already happening now and are growing more serious each year.
To help share the beauty of Japanโ€™s traditional architecture, Iโ€™ve joined this project to reimagine the interior of a former vacant home in Kameoka, Kyotoโ€”once owned by Mr. Murata. The space will be ready to welcome guests to stay around this autumn๐Ÿ‚
Iโ€™m truly honored and grateful to be part of such a meaningful project with Airbnb. Thank you so much for the opportunityโค๏ธ #ใ‚จใ‚ขใƒ“ใƒผ

I used to always color my hair, but now Iโ€™m letting my natural black hair grow! Iโ€™ve started to love what I already have๐Ÿค
