The first man I ever loved.

Just sitting with you today, peacefully, after so many years… felt like something we both forgot we missed. You had your beer, smiled at me, and said, “You don’t drink, Shona.” And I smiled back, because you were right.

You’ve always treated me like a buddy. I still remember helping you find girlfriends just so I could have a mom around. You’d ask, “Do you like her?” and I’d go, “No, she’s boring!” That’s how we’ve always been. Honest, weird, funny, and real.

I’m so grateful you never abandoned me, Papa. Not like how some parents do. And if you had, I honestly don’t know where I would’ve ended up.

Looking at you made me want to become better. A better singer. A better musician. You taught me to never give up on my dream. You love music in its rawest, most authentic form, and that’s stayed with me. I don’t take shortcuts. I work hard. That’s your gift to me.

People say I’m a Good performer, but they don’t know where it comes from.
They’ve never seen you.

I’ve never seen a performer like you.
Even today, after all the names and all the hype, no one matches what I saw growing up.
You were my hero on stage.
