As with most meet-ups of those in middle age — Hardy is 47 — it begins with a couple of bottles of alcohol-free beer and a discussion of bodily ailments.

➡️ “I’ve had two knee surgeries now, my disc’s herniated in my back, I’ve got sciatica as well,” he says. “And I have that… is it plantar fasciitis? Where did that come from? And why? Why?! And I pulled my tendon in my hip as well. It’s like, it’s all falling to bits now, and it’s not going to get better.”

He certainly looks in decent enough shape — he’s wearing slim-fitting dark trousers and a shirt, and smart shoes, and his shoulders and neck are powerful and thick. His face doesn’t have the feline delicacy it once had, but it looks like he’s lived in it, which I suppose he has, and he is still by anyone’s reckoning an undeniably handsome man. He says all this, about falling apart, not in a maudlin way but as though ageing is one of life’s more amusing outrages, which I suppose it is.

Plus, this being Hardy, who, as he likes to say, has “a head like a disco ball”, his brain’s already taking him off on one.

“Unless you do all the stem cells…”

Wait. Would he actually do that?

“Probably, yeah. I think if it comes down to the wire and it seems the sensible thing to do and I take advice.” Then he’s talking about placentas and umbilical cords and protecting your children and bespoke homeopathic treatments — during which he uses the word “tinctures”, which I’ve not heard many people do — until he leans back on the sofa and sums up his position, using the non-royal “we”, as he often does, I suspect because it spares him the horror of the “I”: “This is the biopsy of where we’re at: two vapes, somebody else’s clothes, and a hotel room that neither of us feels comfortable in!”

“We can see ourselves
in all living things
so one has to care
about everything and
approach it with love.
Unless it attacks you.
In which case, lovingly,
see it off with a big stick.”

❤️ Profound words from Tom that I needed on my timeline today.

The way he says “Silly bugger”
Bonus: that laugh.

“I keep a small social circle. A very small social circle. I know how to have small talk at parties when I need to, but I’m much happier by myself.” He’s an introvert, he says, and it might be the least surprising bit of trivia about Tom Hardy. Better to observe people. “But you don’t judge,” he clarifies. (Sharp magazine interview, 2015)

“There’s a definite detachment between a public persona and a person. It would be insane, for me anyway, to open myself up entirely to the world. There are two things in my world that are important to me — my family and my work — and I will protect both of them fiercely to the death. So when things about me come out, then you can have it, it’s cool, because it will never touch what’s inside here [taps his chest].” (shortlist.com interview, 2011)

Remembering the legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman on what would’ve been his 58th birthday. ♥️

1. Photo (detail) by @monique.carboni “shot when we were upstate workshopping new plays in 2007 and Tom Hardy totally geeked out when he met Phil … This is the Phil i knew - a guy who worked his fuckin’ balls off and laughed them off just as hard. We were working on Brett C. Leonard’s new play ‘The Long Red Road’ in Vermont, which Phil went on to direct at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago and Tom Hardy starred.”
2. Talking about making The Long Red Road, video by the Goodman Theatre, 2010
3. Another great shot by Monique Carboni
4. A remembrance shared last year by the @criterioncollection ~ “On his birthday, we’re remembering Philip Seymour Hoffman—one of the great artists of his generation, who captured the essence of human frailty and resilience with extraordinary range and nuance. ❤️ We salute a consummate actor’s actor whose soul-baring vulnerability and deep commitment to his craft have been sorely missed.”
5. One that I always think about
6. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
7. PSH by Brigitte Lacombe

“You know the circus performer who spins the plates in the air you know, and he’ll spin six or seven plates in the air? Acting sometimes is kind of that guy spinning all those plates in the air but in your head and in your body.” - Philip Seymour Hoffman

Everyone’s a tough guy til Bane gently rests his hand on your shoulder.

#Onthisday 13 years ago, The Dark Knight Rises was released.

Did you know:
The line “Do you feel in charge?” spoken by Tom Hardy as Bane was improvised. Christopher Nolan gave the actors freedom to explore their characters and with this line Tom Hardy added an unforgettable layer of menace to the scene with Ben Mendelsohn.

On this day 15 years ago, Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION released in theaters.

Considered one of the best films of the 2010s and the 21st century.

We first meet Tom Hardy’s legendary Eames at a bar in Mombasa, where Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) finds him gambling forged poker chips.

Happy National #ILoveHorses Day!

😅😅😅

Actually, Tom has admitted that he’s afraid of horses.

“I don't like horses. They scare me. […] I prefer dogs; they are a bit more manageable. I think horses are beautiful, but I didn't know any growing up. It's quite alien. They are so big and muscular. If they sat on me or kicked me, that would be it - wouldn't it? You always hear about people walking around the back of a horse and getting kicked. I always think if anyone is going to get kicked by a horse walking around the back of it, it's most likely going to be me." (2015 variety.com interview)

Despite this, he mastered his fear to ride horses for his roles in "The Revenant" and the TV series "Taboo.” And, of course, in “Venom: The Last Dance.” 😉 (epic inside joke courtesy of Kelly Marcel 💯😂😭)

Who else misses Tom (and MobLand only ended a few weeks ago)

#TomHardy by Simon Emmett for #Esquire UK summer 2025 | interview: Miranda Collinge

co He works really hard.
“I got dizzy today. I took a Sudafed and it’s starting to work, so l feel better but in the interviews I was sitting there, and you know when you feel not right, but you can’t tell someone you don’t feel right? Like,
‘Listen, if I pass out..’”

co There are ailments.
“I’ve had two knee surgeries now, my disc’s herniated in my back, l’ve got sciatica as well. And I have that... is it plantar fasciitis?
Where did that come from? And why? Why?! And I pulled my tendon in my hip as well. It’s like, it’s all falling to bits now, and it’s not going to get better.”

co His ambition has shifted.
“There’s a sort of, I guess, maturing. I’ve done a little bit in every single genre that l’ve ever wanted to do, and I’ve played on some big fields, you know? I’ve done some stinkers, l’ve done some cool things, l’ve played with some really amazing luminaries and people, l’ve had some really cool opportunities. I’m not retiring myself but l’m just saying,
‘What do you want to do with that?’ I’ve been running at something that I had to run at, to get an understanding that it’s not going anywhere. There’s only more, more, more. Of what?
Stomach ulcers? Blood pressure? Your knees are going, your hair’s falling out, your teeth are wonky, you’re almost 50... Maybe it’s a self-worth thing, maybe it’s not finishing school, maybe it’s not being good enough. But all this ‘I’ll show, I’ll show’... Show who? No one cares! I know I can do it. Well then, chill out. Powerless is a key motive. How do you handle your powerlessness? And then there are the existential questions of, why am 1 even here? Why do I have to die alone? Haha!”
