Pluto is nearly 3.7 billion miles from the sun, so even at its brightest, it appears as a tiny speck. On July 25, it reaches opposition, when it's fully lit from our perspective—reducing shadows and making it easier to spot with a telescope. Though still very faint, the dwarf planet will stay near peak brightness for several days, giving us a chance to look closer under dark skies.

A spate of intense solar flare activity prompted a rare aurora borealis in the skies above the saguaro-strewn desert outside Tucson, Arizona.

“I’ve chased the northern lights as far as Canada’s Northwest Territories, but there was just no way I’d have thought of it happening here,” says photographer Jack Dykinga. “I think it’s the closest thing to magic that you can see.”
