Introducing to the world, Maratus ‘su’ae, a spider named after me! It is a newly described species of peacock spider that I discovered in July ‘19! Maratus suae is one of the seven new species hot off the press, described by @joseph.schubert. Thanks, Joseph!
Does the world need more spiders? YES! Especially when they are so pretty!
Why find new ones and name them? Biodiversity! Our world is rich with some uniquely beautiful species, thanks to millions of years of evolution. Each species has a place in the complex and fragile ecosystem. Everything hangs in balance. The recent bushfires which devastated acres of forests and wildlife might have engulfed many teeny tiny species that might have gone extinct even before we could see them. It is useful to have a record, monitor them and minimise the effect of human activity on their fragile ecosystems.
Keep an eye out, observe, conserve and be scientific.
