For most of Earth’s history, the oceans weren’t blue; they were green.

A new study by scientists at Nagoya University reveals that from 3 billion to 600 million years ago, Earth’s oceans were likely green due to cyanobacteria and ancient ocean chemistry.

💡 Why?

Ancient oceans contained iron hydroxide, which absorbed blue light

Cyanobacteria absorbed red and blue light, reflecting green

The result: a “Pale Green Dot”, not the blue Earth we know

🌊 Scientists modeled light conditions of early Earth and found that cyanobacteria evolved special pigments called phycobilins to thrive in the available light, further explaining the planet’s green hue.

But this isn’t just ancient history…

A 2019 MIT study predicted that half of Earth’s oceans could turn green by 2100 due to rising phytoplankton from climate change.
And by 2023, scientists found 56% of oceans had already shifted toward green.

The color of our planet isn’t permanent. It never was.

A new study by Canine Cottages found that when owners say “I love you,” their dogs' heart rates jump by 46% from a resting 67 bpm to 98 bpm.
